Reveal day

div align="center">The Lean Green Bean

Well I'm a couple days late on this months reveal, so sorry, I had it all written yesterday and then it timed out before I got to post it. Let's try for round two!
In January I got an amazing box from Megan over at http://www.irunforwine.net she is my culinary soulmate, we love lots of the same things. I think this definitely qualifies as my best box ever!
On to the good stuff lets talk about what I got. There was a chocolate bar with chili in it, I haven't opened it yet, Megan says its not as spicy as you would think. I'm currently munching on the butter cookies with chocolate, a great breakfast snack if I do say so myself. There was also some seafood sauce, which I'm planning on getting some shrimp for later today for the super bowl. I don't want to watch the game, but I do love commercials, and I want to see if I won the work squares.
She sent me a coupon for free wholly guacamole, which has been on my list of things to try, but can't usually justify making the purchase. That makes this perfect! Also since Megan had recently been to key west and included a box of key lime creme brûlée mix. Some Disney tea, and a little container of fancy spread that I'm trying to find the perfect vehicle for.
Now let's talk about the best part of box, it involves..... You guessed it, bacon! That little tiny bottle is bacon vodka! She told me about it and then transferred some from her large bottle into a small one for me. Very awesome because I haven't been able to find it locally, despite what their website says. Megan mentioned that she likes to put it in bloody Mary's. I don't normally like bloody Mary's, but the bacon vodka might just make them bearable. There was also a little package of bacon salt. I couldn't wait for that, I actually out it on my sandwich that night, I made a chicken and ranch pita sandwich with spinach and then sprinkled just a pink of the bacon salt on the sandwich. It was awesome, a little bit goes a long way.
Ne that you've heard about my goodies, go check out Megan at http://www.irunforwine.net and to see what I sent out to my foodie penpal for the month check out http://healthygirlgamer.com/

This is an awesome program that is fun and easy so I have included some details about the program below and you can click the button at the beginning of this post to sign up with Lindsey over at the lean green bean.

Here’s a detailed explanation of the program:

-On the 5th of the month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get their mailing address and any other information you might need like allergies or dietary restrictions.
-You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
-The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15. The box must also include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box, to a fun recipe…use your imagination!
-You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your items depending on their size and how fragile they are. (Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!)
-Foodie Penpals is open to blog readers as well as bloggers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you can choose to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on their blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month.
- Foodie Penpals is open to US, Canadian residents & UK residents. Please note, Canadian Residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from US to Canada and vice versa. So, I’m going to keep two separate lists and match US w/ US and Canada w/ Canada!

Truth

So there is truth that I can find bacon anywhere.... Today I went to the local Asian supermarket which is super fun (more on that trip later) and found Asian bacon! It was flavored with soy sauce and was very expensive, like $6 for a small package so I didn't buy it, but I did take a photo.
My friend who is a teacher also posted this hilarious school paper on Facebook.

Christmas appetizer.... With bacon!

Since I served Christmas dinner for everyone here this year I had some appetizers, dips and things to have out before the meal while people are chatting and opening presents. Plus that's usually the time I'm int he kitchen rushing around getting the meal finished so it keeps everyone in the living room and out of my hair.
I saw the lazy guy on the pilsbury commercial make these bacon cheddar pinwheels and decided they would be perfect. Of course since its me I didn't go on the website and look up the recipe I decided to just wing it. So here's what I ended up doing.
First I cooked my bacon on a sheet pan in the oven. I did it this way for a couple different reason, one because I had to make a ton of bacon for multiple components of my meal, and also because it's less messy than the stovetop. To cook the bacon you lay the bacon on on some parchment paper on the cookie sheet and then cover it with bacon. Then put the pans in a cold oven and turn it up to 375 and cook for 20 minutes. The foil keeps it from getting burned and also from getting oil all over your oven.
Then I layer out the crescent roll and add a layer of shredded cheese. I chose a Monterey jack blend rather than just a straight cheddar. Then I add a layer of chopped bacon and roll it up. This is where it got a little tricky because I had to slice them without ripping or smashing them. I found a sharp knife (not serrated) and kind of a sawing motion worked the best. I did slices that were about 1/2 inch thick.
Make sure you grease the pans well and cook at 400 for about 12 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is melted. They were easy to make and a big hit.

Pig candy!?!?!

You all know how much I love bacon and pork. Actually one of my members brought in a present for me to my old boss and it was a piggy bank. She said it was because I like pigs so much, mind you my office is loaded with penguins not pigs, but when my old boss sent it to my new office he told me the story.... All I could think was "well I do love pig products"
This summer I was in Rochester, NY at park ave fest, which is a huge art and music festival every August. I was taking my walk down the street, the festival spans about 8 large city blocks and as I was walking I passed a sign for a BBQ stand from a new restaurant in east Rochester, good smoke BBQ. And on the sign two words just spoke to me.... Like they knew I was about to walk by and they were written there just for me..... "pig candy"
You know there was not a chance I could walk away without getting my hands on some pig candy and at that point I had no idea what it even was. I just knew I needed to have whatever it was!
What I got was some very good bacon, tossed in their spice rub and signature BBQ sauce. It was in a word.... Amazing! It may have increased my love of pig products and bacon, something I didn't even know was possible. Their rub had just the right amount of smoke and heat, without too much spice. The sauce was perfect, not too sweet and kept the heat from the rub at bay. Wash it all down with an ice cold coke and that's what I call the American dream!

Bacon, bacon, bacon!!!

Any excuse for me to talk about bacon right? You guys all know I can't go a day without thinking of or talking about my favorite food group, that's right..... Bacon!!!

I stopped in North East, Maryland (that's actually the name of the town) to go to woody's crab shack (highly recommended, but more about that in a later post) and wasn't super hungry so I decided to walk around main street and enjoy some of the local color. I wandered into the local general store and stopped by their candy counter and noticed they had bacon bark! Calling my name.... I looked at the tag which said bacon bark: chocolate, mango, cyanne pepper, and something else.... But let me tell you what it doesn't have in it.... Bacon! Bacon bark with no bacon. The lady behind the counter told me "you wouldn't believe it but all the ingredients combined taste exactly like bacon". Really? She didn't offer me a sample though, so much for customer service and it was like 9.99 a pound and I wasn't gonna pay that much for something that didn't even have bacon in it! So I have no idea how it tasted, she then told me "I don't eat pork products... But my friend Casey swears it tastes just like it".
Let me tell you something little girl, no one tells me "new truths" about bacon, especially someone who tells me they don't eat "pork products"... have a little respect.

Now on to some things that do contain bacon.... Recently I have had some bacon sightings. First up is bacon jerky, I found it in a shop rite in Pennsylvania and it looks yummy. Actually it kind of looks like they put bacon in a bag and are selling it as jerky.... Having made my own jerky with my ronco food dehydrator (I love infomercial items) I know the general process and assume that they dehydrated the bacon a bit, but still not sure they could get it to jerky levels. I think bacon has too much fat. Regardless my loyal readers know I embrace every new bacon product (at least ones that are really bacon, see above)

I also found bacon dressing at the Amish general store in Lancaster county, yum.

When driving back from camping fourth of July weekend I drove past a road and had to turn around to get a photo of the sign because I couldn't believe it.... You guessed it, bacon brook road. I figured the road must contain bacon, or at least a pig since I was in a very rural area upstate. I almost stole the sign, I had all the tools, but it seemed like bad karma so I just took a photo. I had to go back and check the photo and make sure I wasn't hallucinating and it was actually beacon brook rd or something, so here it is for evidence!

It's about time

Well the last month has been super busy between work, having a craft show, moving, and traveling I haven't had time to post. I'll catch up more soon especially photos from my trip to California memorial day weekend, but for now..... The bacon sundae at burger king was available locally last Thursday so you know I had one for lunch that day... Probably not a balanced meal, but a yummy one at any rate. Overall I would give it a 7 which is pretty good considering it's a fast food sundae. 95% of the bacon was nice and crispy, I think a drizzle of caramel would have taken it much higher. Definitely a nice treat, I doubt I could eat them too often, but a nice treat when I'm having a rough day.
Below is a photo of my bacon sundae, I almost ate it in the car before I could take a photo hehehe. Also pictured are some bacon sunflower seeds that I picked up on my way home. Haven't eaten those yet though, been feeling a little queasy lately (no I told you so's, it wasn't the sundae I swear) but I'll keep you posted on the seeds. I wonder if i plant them in my garden... Maybe I could get giant sunflowers that smell like bacon.
